On the 12 February 2012, Bikebug.com athlete Matt Williams competed successfully at the Geelong Multisport Festival, racing in the Open/Elite Category of the Olympic Distance race - the first round of the Australian Championship series. Here is his report:
"I arrived in Geelong on Friday night, the weather was horrendous with torrential rain which continued throughout Saturday and into Sunday morning.
I arrived at the race location and started to prepare as the rain continued to tumble down, the swim start was a run in from the beach, I found myself just off the back of the leaders by the first buoy and had lost a bit of time, I came out of the water in third place and held this position as I left transition on the bike for the 40km ride in the rain.
The bike course was challenging, the conditions very windy and the rain continued, as a strong rider these conditions suited me and I caught the leaders early on the course, from there I had an open road ahead, it was a fairly flat bike course with few undulations, at the turn around I had the wind at my back and now had a sizable lead, coming back into transition there was a few tight corners so I took them easy as it was still very wet and didn’t want to do anything silly to jeopardise my lead.
I started the 10km run with a 3 minute advantage over second place and was feeling really good, the run course had some steep hills that hurt the legs and I had lost a little bit of fitness due to a virus 3 weeks earlier that affected my overall run time, with 4km to go the legs were starting to feeling the pinch but I kept pushing through and crossed the finish line in 1st place of the Open/Elite category. I was really happy with the race but am confident I can build on this result and time.
Thank you FRF and Bikebug.com for all your support.
Matt"
